Counseling Needs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Counseling Needs - Essay Example The diagram on the next page illustrates the framework to be followed by me as the counsellor. The figure shows the interrelationship between the client and the counsellor, within the content and process influences that impact upon the individual, with the collaboration and intervention of the counsellor. I should work closely with policy makers in the organization, based on the theory by Savickas, Van Esbroeck and Herr that career guidance is a socio-political instrument for advancing organizational goals while helping the individual to realize a personally satisfying career (Patton & McMahon, 2006:231). The policy makers set the organizational system, which functions inside the social and environmental/societal systems. Working in the system side by side with the individual is the counsellor, who uses a collaborative and negotiating technique that makes up the pro-active approach. The counsellor finds out the policies and objectives in the organization, and helps the individual to adjust to the constantly changing organization.

Hebrew Bible Essay Example for Free

Hebrew Bible Essay I attended the First Baptist Church this last week. The message the pastor shared was from the book of Proverbs. This is the Old Testament of our scriptures. This is the Hebrew Bible which is regularly used in the Baptist Church. The passage taught this week was â€Å"32 My children, listen to me. Blessed are those who keep my ways. 33 Listen to my teaching and be wise. Dont turn away from it. 34 Blessed is the one who listens to me. He watches every day at my doors. He waits beside my doorway. 35 Those who find me find life. They receive favor from the Lord. † (Proverbs 8:32-35). The Old Testament was incorporated into the service by the Pastor in way of introduction. The pastor will stand before the congregation and ask them to turn to a certain passage. The passage he directed us all to this week was Proverbs 8:32-35. The passage is talking about finding wisdom wisdom in the Lord. The Pastor taught on how that passage is just as true to the listener today as it was in times past. When we find that wisdom we listen to that wisdom and we remain obedient to that wisdom then we receive favor from the Lord. This applied thousands of years ago when the Hebrew King David wrote the Proverbs and it applies today. The writings of the Hebrew Bible are as applicable today as they were thousands of years ago. The God of our Bible Old and New Testaments is the same today and yesterday. Applying the lessons from His scripture is the right thing to do -as much today as yesterday. Verse 33 in the reading directs the reader to not turn away from wisdom. That applies to everyone’s life. Makes no difference if one is a believer in the writings of the Hebrew Bible or not. Hanging on to wisdom is a smart thing to do. Bibliography Proverbs. (2009). Bible Gateway. New International Readers Version. Reduction in Force :: essays research papers

The Role of Length of Service in a Reduction in Force Organizations participating in a reduction in force (RIF) are typically reacting to an economic reason. A poorly designed and executed RIF procedure is fraught with potential litigation possibilities. Using â€Å"†¦length of service with the company or in a job classification is the most common, easiest, and most objective standard† (Wildman-Harrold).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Any RIF is subject to potential lawsuits. Considering the number of employees involved, the amount of potential damages can easily escalate. Consequently, RIF decisions need to be consistent, uniformly applied, and based on objective measures.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Using seniority has several advantages. It is a quantifiable measurement that is readily understood and appreciated by employees. Using Seniority can also aid in the positive perception that employees have in their organization by valuing loyalty. Seniority can also reduce the liability that comes with age discrimination. One survey indicated that age discrimination claims are twice as frequent as any other claim in a RIF. (Wildman-Harrold)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  While using seniority as a RIF measurement tool has distinct advantages, companies that use seniority as the sole measurement tool for a RIF put themselves at a disadvantage. These companies are potentially at risk for not retaining productive and high performing, less senior employees. Companies that create a hybrid of measurements that include skill set analysis and performance based measurements, along with seniority will be better served. Considerations of Gender, Race, Age, and Other â€Å"Protected Class† Designations State and Federal laws protect employees from unlawful termination based on gender, race, and age. It is estimated from the â€Å"Displaced Worker Survey† that over 2.4% of all employees displaced in the mid 1990’s filed a discrimination claim with the EEOC (Harriet Zellner, 1998, p.1). Understanding this large potential risk, employers must be cognizant of the effect that any RIF will have as it relates to this protected class. To understand the potential implication of a RIF on the employer’s protected class, the employer should conduct â€Å"statistical pre-testing of RIF lists† (Harriet Zellner, 1998, p.1). In this process the employer would conduct a mock RIF to develop lists of employees both before and after the RIF. These lists would provide the statistical data for the workforce composition, from which a statistical analysis of patterns in the data are completed. From this data, the organization must make an assessment whether the statistics represent a disparate impact on a protected class. If a disparate impact exists, the organization needs to determine if the impact is statistically significant, is the RIF process fair, impartial, and caused by a business need?

Finance Analysis Essay

Nike continues its lead based on this test. | †¢ Both companies have a ratio higher than the dangerous 1. 0 acid test ratio. Both companies are able to pay their current liabilities. †¢ This test shows that Under Armour is more financially stable. †¢ Another conclusion that can be based on this test is that Under Armour`s current assets are more dependent on inventory than Nike`s current assets| Conclusion: Basing ourselves on the acid test ratio we concluded that both companies have no liquidity issues and are able to maintain their liquidity far above the required minimum. There was a change in the leading position from 2009-2010. Nike improved their liquidity and took the lead. Another conclusion about the business styles of the two companies is the fact that Under Armour keeps a higher dependency of current assets on inventory, which is more typical for retail store businesses. 2. Profitability | Comparison between Nike & Under Armour| | 2010| 2009| Gross Profit Margin| The gross profit margin of both companies is almost the same. The lack of fluctuations in the GPM suggests that there were no major changes in the sports apparel industry and its development is fairly stable. The huge differences in net profit margin show that the marketing/administration costs of sports apparel companies are big. This also implies that operating costs and cost of goods sold of sports apparel companies is relatively low. Under Armour has a lower Rate Earned on Total Assets and a smaller growth based on a year to year comparison. This may be a result of bad managerial decisions or less effective managerial team. Based on the leverage Nike is a better choice for investment in comparison to Under Armor. 3. Solvency | Comparison between Nike & Under Armour| | 2010| 2009| Solvency Ratio| Both companies have solvency ratios that are far above the critical 20%. Nike has a little bit higher solvency ratio than Under Armour. The problem is that the solvency ratio of Nike has fallen with almost 2% for one year. | Both companies have solvency ratios that are far above the critical 20%. Nike has a little bit higher solvency ratio than Under Armour. Working Capital| Nike has a much larger working capital which is understandable based on the size of the two companies. Nevertheless Under Armour shows a larger percentage increase in Working Capital in comparison to 2009 (UA 24% Increase, NIKE – 18% Increase)| Nike has a much larger working capital which is understandable based on the size of the two companies. | Conclusion: Nike & Under Armour show a high solvency ratio which means that they are capable of meeting their debt obligations. The solvency ratio in Under Armour is lower, but on the other hand the company shows a fairly constant rise in these criteria. Nike lost some of its solvency during 2010. The size of the two companies and the stage of development in which they are result in large differences in the amount of working capital. Again Under Armour shows a higher growth of working capita, 24% compared to the 17% growth in Nike. 4. Cash flow adequacy | Comparison between Nike & Under Armour| | 2010| 2009| Cash flow adequacy ratio| Nike clears its cash problems and increases its cash flow adequacy ratio to a sufficient level. In contrast Under Armour loses its advantage and falls below the critical 1. ratio. A sign of potential liquidity problems in the future. | Under Armour showed a sufficient amount of cash to cover its obligation during the year. In comparison Nike fell under the 1. 0 level which is a sign of potential liquidity problems| Conclusion: There are a lot of changes in both companies based on these criteria. Nike raised their cash flow adequacy ratio to normal levels that may increase the trust in the company. On the other hand Under Armour shows a disturbing 2010 Cash Flow adequacy ratio that may be a sign for future liquidity problems. . Asset utilization | Comparison between Nike & Under Armour| | 2010| 2009| Cash flow adequacy ratio| Nike clears its cash problems and increases its cash flow adequacy ratio to a sufficient level. Poem

The poem mess it's about a town sunken in floods, when it says â€Å"deserted room through which a river passes/dragging along the stones†. It also says â€Å"l arrive full of mud and death† and â€Å"corpses are sleeping† which shows significant amount of deaths that would occur during a natural disaster. Also, emotions such as fear and sadness have been conveyed through lines such as â€Å"menacing gestures†, â€Å"a terrifying deserted dining room† and â€Å"l am sad†. â€Å"Melancholy inside families† is a visual experience In the form of words, depicting a disaster struck environment.Furthermore, it can be Imagined hat the 1st person narration Is coming from some form of matter other than humans. 2. Record two examples of Juxtaposition In the poem. â€Å"A dining room where roses arrive/a dining room deserted† and â€Å"a grocery store â€Å"a dining room deserted as a fish bone†- simile. â€Å"a ray of moonlight t ied down†-metaphor. 4. It only takes a moment for everything to fall apart, tomorrow is not going to be what it is today. PART B 5. Describe Nurse's inspirations.During his beginning years, Nurse's inspiration was his mentor Gabriele Mistral, who gave him encouragement; this is clearly visible in his first poem titled enthusiasm and perseverance†. Once he had established himself in the publishing industry, his inspirations were drawn from social and political beliefs, especially communism and Marxism. A great example for this is his work during the Spanish civil war and revolution which resulted in the loss of his friend Garcia Loran. This difficult time inspired his work â€Å"Spain in our hearts†.As pragmatic his political views were, his romantic side was equally notable. Nearer went through many failed relationships before he met his wife, these heart-breaking experiences inspired any of his romantic works, and the top of the list would be his work â€Å"20 p oems of love and 1 song of desperation†. Needless to say, almost every experience in his life has inspired him. For example, when he was forced into exile by his own countrymen, he came up with his work â€Å"The Grapes and the wind†.In his final years, his inspiration was his wife; his love for her inspired him to write â€Å"100 Sonnets of Love†. 6. Other than poetry, in what activities was Nearer involved? Other than poetry, Nearer had an eye for political reforms such as promoting communism and Marxism In both Chile and Spain. He was also responsible for keeping up diplomatic relations for the countries he represented (Chile and Spain). 7. In your own words, describe Nurse's poetic philosophy. Nurse's poetry is not imaginary or larger than life, it is based on real life experiences of the past, present and coming future.Nurse's idea was not satisfy his thirst for writing poems but to entertain people by constantly experimenting with his poetry, similar to how Picasso experimented with his paintings. Just like Picasso, Nurse's works were also drawn from war, misery, pain sufferings and love. It is understood Nearer was a one who believed pen is mightier Han sword, because no matter how difficult his situations were, he responded through his poetry about his life also managing to woo women with his romantic works. In my opinion, Nurse's philosophy was to help people understand what was happening around them.Nearer possibly felt that people were living in an environment where their vision was being clouded and he felt it was important to they have a beautiful and prosperous country to live but they are not getting full advantage of it, this is of course with reference to his work inspired from politics. However, in terms of his love poems, he wanted to help readers relate the poem to heir lives, since he has had experiences which his readers also might have had, such as failed marriage, relationships and falling in love. PART C 8. Day drea mer So often I drown†¦ To this thick white puddle. I do not recall its foundations. It never found me in sleep, for my eyes were never shuttered when it struck. It struck in silence so it never occurred, until the teacher's apple struck with vengeance. Reel of images stop abrupt, eyes crowding on me from every needle. My soul lost, hardly found way back inside. I did not stop it, now way But face it. Wrapped around me like load not, like a girl who held my face and let stare. I was living double lives and climbing cliffs. Often climbing halfway, breaking into portals, Nearly reaching summits that let fly buttoned, yet unbuttoned shirts. And often I see Rum's field, beyond right and wrong.Should I Jump, should I survive? I Jump, for I was immortal to the subconscious. So l, the attention deficit, flinching at my immortality, divinity, hunger to imagine, comparing myself to the creator, for I nurtured a world where I was, just me. 9. Write a love poem to Mario to Beatrice. Be sure to include metaphor. Perch © by Shun Moon perch ©? I the brave onlooker, loud but shy, fisherman yet weak, y boat will sink at when your waves of gaze taunt me. Perch © ? I the Play full lime, Riding along the eclipse of Sun, sea and cliff. Absent and careless, present And dreaming.I will pedal for you till the End of top, through hairpins To heaven and fall to the end of bottom. Perch ©? I the speechless owl, Drifting raft with a leaking drum, Blood and sweat, rush and drain, Drenching me when you near, This isn't fear, its hard labor, Trying to handle your ignorance As you gush past. Don't look away, I'm No prince, I'm no Jester, I'm no gold. I'm me, I'm strong, I'll play with you, Laugh with you, I'll cry With you, I swear on thee I'll flee before sun rise, In search of metaphors and Come suffer with me, I'll return For you when sun shay away, with bread, butter and love.Perch ©? I the awful poet, Looking for words to claim Your heart, I may fail now, but this birth I shall spend gathering courage to say I love you. 10. Identify three aspects of Nurse's real life used in the film. What facts have been changed? A) Nearer fled his country into exile due to political pressure. B) Nearer was admired by females. C) Nearer very much loved his wife. However, Nurse's wife is said to have been a singer, but the movie does not put any mind of spotlight on her. Also, Nurse's exile was not spent in Italy. 1 . How are words shown to have power? State what the film has to say about the power of words and poetry. Words are the main reason the character Beatrice fall for Mario, it Maria's research on metaphors and poetry that led to him reciting poems that flattered Beatrice. In the movie, Nearer tells Mario that he needs an inspiration for his poetry and not Just words, and Mario figures out that Beatrice has to be the centre of his inspiration if he has to write her a poem and not Just metaphors. The vie also emphasizes that setting plays a strong role in writi ng a poem, as the movie shows Nearer asking Mario about the most beautiful things about the town and in the end of the movie Mario recording what are actually the most beautiful things about the town. 12. Beatrice poem to Mario. Wedding bells Walk down the aisle, For I have fallen for thy Words or purity. Find your best man, For I'm ready to march With him towards god. Same when two circles Of gold enter this life For the bond that may See no end. Carry me to the shay, For I shall ride with You to the end of the world.

Documentary vs Fashion Photography essays

Documentary vs Fashion Photography essays Comparing and Contrasting Documentary and Fashion Photography This essay is a study on documentary and fashion photography, and on how they may have similarities and differences. This study will involve the research of photographers who have had the most influence on the two styles of photography, who in their own right have shaped the styles of Documentary and Fashion photography to what we know now. Irving Penn, Nan Goldin, Nick Knight and Patrick Demarchelier are examples of the photographers I will be using for research of this study. Both documentary and fashion photography have a long history, in fact it could be argued that the two styles have been around near the creation of a camera. Fashion photography has most certainly come about since the works of Hill and Adamson in the 1840s, where they shot photographs of models facing away from the camera, the main focus being on the clothes they wore. Both subjects are very broad, and although they can be similar in approach, they also can be on the opposite side of the scale to one another. The argument is that documentary photography is the photographic reproduction of reality and that fashion photography is a manipulated and false view on that very reality. However there is an area between the two where the use of both fashion and documentary photography is apparent. Documentary has been used at times in some fashion photography by replicating the grittiness and the imperfect look of documentary style images, an approach that has been used more and more in pres ent day fashion spreads. Documentary photography on the surface is known mostly as the factual, realistic approach to photography. In James Curtis Making Sense of Documentary Photography, he states that Public and scholarly faith in the realism of the photographic image is grounded in a belief that a photograph is a mechanical reproduction of reality. What he means by this is that most ...

Contemporary Hospitality Industry Assignment Tourism Essay Essay Example

Contemporary Hospitality Industry Assignment Tourism Essay Essay Example Contemporary Hospitality Industry Assignment Tourism Essay Essay Contemporary Hospitality Industry Assignment Tourism Essay Essay The chief purpose of this study is to supply a brief description of the cordial reception industry in UK along with its size, range and diverseness in order to convert the panel of possible investors to put in the cordial reception industry. My direction consultancy house was asked to bring forth a formal study concentrating on the foreign concern people to assist them to make up ones mind whether to put or non in peculiar sector of the industry for the coming London 2012 Olympic games. It will supply them a brief description of different ownership manners, direction manners every bit good as organizational construction of several different sectors of the cordial reception industry. Moreover, it will besides supply the item analysis of current tendencies, issues and recent developments within the industry. There are different sectors in the cordial reception industry like hotels, eating houses, nines and bars, contract catering, casinos etc.The peculiar sector that I am traveling to conc entrate is the adjustment sector i.e. hotel and I am showing the thoughts that I have generated while making the research. Cordial reception industry is a really wide industry. It is non ever easy to specify the cordial reception industry. There are different standards of specifying it.One of the manner of specifying cordial reception industry is by utilizing Standard Industrial Classification ( SIC ) which was founded in United Kingdom in 1948. It defined the cordial reception industry under the 1968 categorization, as Constitutions ( whether or non licensed for the sale of elating spiritss ) supplying repasts, light refreshments, drink or adjustment . ( Joness, 2002 ) .Hospitality industry is defined as hotel, motels, hostel or such concerns that provides transitional or short-run housing, with or without food. ( Businessdictionary.com ) . Both definition suggests that cordial reception industry is the industry which provide nutrient and adjustment to the guest.Hospitality industry is made up of two distinguishable services- proviso of nightlong adjustment for people remaining off from place, and the proviso of nutriment for people eating off from place or non fixing their ain repasts. ( Joness, 2002 ) . British Cordial reception: Trends A ; Developments 2010 which was published today has revealed that, despite the recession, the UK hotel industry is go oning to spread out, with over 10,400 suites opening in 2010 and a farther 43,000 planned for the period 2011-2015. ( British Hospitality Association,14/11/2010 ) .The hotel industry is booming every year. Moreover, the tourer coming to the UK particularly London is neer halting. The sum spent by abroad visitants to the UK rose by 15.9 % during July 2010A to ?1.96b, compared with ?1.69b during the same month of 2009, harmonizing to the Government s latest Overseas Travel and Tourism figures. The figure of abroad visits to the UK increased by 4.9 % to 3.24 million during this period, compared with 3.1 million in July 2010. ( Caterersearch.com ) .By looking at the figures above we can state that it is unafraid and safe to put in the hotel industry. There are assorted sectors in the adjustment where man of affairs can invest. They can put in different types of concatenation hotels, concern and conference hotel, budget hotels, dress shop hotels, motels, lodges etc. They can put in the bing belongings or construct up hotels by themselves. If they invest in concatenation and popular hotels they may salvage the clip and money for the advertizements and promotions.Budget hotels are besides acquiring popular presents because of the low disposable income.People want to pass less money and acquire good installations and service. Moreover, they can besides build a new hotel by themselves where they can be the exclusive proprietor and can hold control over the net income and loss of the business.Business people can besides purchase the franchising licence or make the direction catching. Scale, range and diverseness The cordial reception is one of the largest and fastest turning industry in the universe. There are merely over 46,000 hotels and guest houses in the UK, and the hotel industry remains a important sector of the economic system, with an one-year turnover of around ?40billion ( Trends A ; Statisticss, 2008, British Hospitality Association ) . Harmonizing to the British Hospitality Association, the industry is made up of about 127,000 belongingss and employs a work force of 1.6 million people. It is really big and diverse industry. It is the 3rd largest company that provides employment. The range of the UK cordial reception industry is really big. There are different commercial sector like hotels, eating houses, fast nutrient mercantile establishments, takeouts, motels, inns, saloons, nines etc whereas the public assistance sector like educational establishments, halls of abode, infirmaries, old age places, prisons etc. Many tourers are coming to the state every twelvemonth as the London is popular metropolis around the world. We can happen many large hotels in London in order to suit big no. of tourers every night. Therefore big no. of work force is required in order to run such hotels which creates 1000000s of occupations. The cordial reception industry is really diverse due to the invention, ownership, categorization and scaling system, degree of service, leisure installations, future tendencies etc. There are different types of hotel which provide criterion services to the guest. The hotel now non merely supply the nutrient and adjustment but besides provides installations like cyberspace, secondary school, swimming pool, sauna bath, jacuzzi, dark nines, stores, hair and beauty salons, wash, auto parking, conference and meeting suites etc.The ownership and categorization of hotel scaling system besides make it diverse. There are different type of ownership and direction manner like sole proprietor, partnership, public limited company and private limited company. The rating system of hotel by evaluation with stars from 1 to 5 degree harmonizing to the degree of service they provide to their invitee. Food service is besides one of the of import installations provided by the hotel. The installations provided by the hotel depends upon the type of the hotel. There are one or many eating houses in a hotel. The eating house supply different type of installations like ala menu bill of fare, counter service, saloon bill of fare, catered service, room service etc.Nowadays we can normally happen a eating house in every hotel. Thus, nutrient service is one of the of import sector of the hotel industry. Another of import sector of the hotel industry is entertainment.Different types of guest semen to the hotel some of them are concern people, leisure invitee, vacation shapers etc.Leisure guest and vacation shapers are going to the full for the intent of entertainment. They want to use their vacations and bask a lot. Therefore, the hotel should supply amusement installations like dark nines, bars, themed parties, casinos, swimming pools, sweat room and jacuzzi, athleticss installations etc. They should set up the indoor activities so that the invitee do nt necessitate to travel outside seeking such installations. Organizational Structure Organistaional construction is the relationhsip between the people and different sections of an organisation.Different administrations have different organizational structure. Some administrations have tall construction whereas some have level structures.Tall organizational construction is in chiefly found in big administrations such as hotels which consists of different degrees of staff from the directors to the workers whereas the level organizational construction do non hold many degree of staff. For e.g. in a level stucture of a eating house an proprietor can be the director and the chef as well. The administration is divided in two different parts forepart of the house and the dorsum of the house.Front of the house are the sections like nutrient and drink, adjustment, conference and feasting etc whereas back of the house are the sections like finance, nutrient readying countries, and the countries non seen by the invitee. In the adjustment sector you can happen different types of ownership and the structure.Mostly two types of ownership are popular in the cordial reception industry. They are exclusive ownership or the franchised.Sole ownership means opening hotel by yourself without taking any fiscal aid from other except loans. The advantage of this type of administration is that the proprietor have exclusive entree to the net income and can do the hotel harmonizing to his thoughts and constructs whereas the disadvantage is that you have to bear all the losings of the concern and may non hold full support as those of concatenation hotels. In this type of ownership the proprietor will hold direct control over the concern. The hotel can be concatenation hotel or franchised and it can besides be the partnership or limited companies. You can straight have a hotel in the concatenation or can acquire it be franchised. You can put in a concatenation hotel where you can be a portion of celebrated concatenation whereas in franchise system of ownership you need to pay the franchisor a royalty fee in order to run the business. In this type of ownership one can salvage the disbursal of selling and publicities as it is already good known by the public. Moreover you will be besides less affected by ups and downs in the concern as you are portion of a concatenation. Both of the above mentioned ownership and direction manner is popular in the hotel industry. The entirely owned hotel should be more promoted in the market as everybody do non cognize more about the hotel. They should seek to be alone by offering broad scope and criterion services so that guest would be lured to come back once more and mention it to other guests. On the other manus the concatenation hotel should seek to keep their criterions as compared to the other concatenation hotels so that the invitee would experience the same criterion of service like in any other concatenation hotel. Contemporary issues The cordial reception industry is confronting many modern-day issues in today s world. There are batch of managerial and operational issue in the cordial reception industry. Some of the operating issues are standard runing process, nutrient and safety, employee outlooks, flexible working, socio- cultural issues, enlisting and keeping, e-commerce etc whereas the managerial issue are cardinal participants in the cordial reception industry, international facets, selling considerations, instruction and preparation suppliers, media issues etc. One of the of import managerial issue in the adjustment sector is to place the key participants in the industry. There are batch of large trade names who are taking in the market. So, you need to place who are the cardinal participants and see how they manage their administration in order to accomplish their ends and objectives. Therefore, in order to stay competitory with such administrations you need to concentrate on the selling scheme and supplying good service to the guest. You should supervise the things go oning around the administration and should pull off the staff decently in order to increase the degree of output.Todays universe is filled with competition so in order to be in the line you should seek to concentrate on the staff direction because if the staff is happy so merely the administration can accomplish their goal. The invitee justice the hotel by the degree of service they provide and the installations they offer so it is really of import to supply quality of service to the invitee. Semiotics Definition and Examples

Semiotics Definition and Examples Semiotics is the theory and study of signs and symbols, especially as elements of language or other systems of communication. Common examples of semiotics include traffic signs, emojis, and emoticons used in electronic communication, and logos and brands used by international corporations to sell us things- brand loyalty, they call it. Semiotics Takeaways Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, in particular as they communicate things spoken and unspoken.Common signs that are understood globally include traffic signs, emojis, and corporate logos.Written and spoken language is full of semiotics in the form of intertextuality, puns, metaphors, and references to cultural commonalities. Signs are all around us. Consider a set of paired faucets in a bathroom or kitchen. The left side is almost certainly the hot water tap, the right is the cold. Many years ago, all taps had letters designating the temperature of the water- in English, H for hot and C for cold; in Spanish, C for hot (caliente) and F for cold (frio). Modern taps often have no letter designations or are included in one tap, but even with a single tap, the semiotic content of faucets still tells us to tilt or turn left for hot water and right for cold. The information about how to avoid being burned is a sign. Practice and History A person who studies or practices semiotics is a semiotician.  Many terms and concepts used by contemporary semioticians were introduced by the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913). Saussure defined a  sign as any motion, gesture, image, pattern, or event that conveys meaning. He defined langue as the structure or grammar of a language and parole as the choices made by the speaker to communicate that information. Semiotics is a key study into the evolution of human consciousness. English philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) tied the advancement of intelligence to three steps: understanding the nature of things, understanding what to do to achieve whatever you wish to achieve, and the ability to communicate these things to another. Language began with signs. In Lockes terminology, signs are dyadic- that is, a sign is tied to a specific meaning. Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) said that signs work only if there is an intelligence capable of learning from experience. Peirces conception of semiotics was triadic: sign, meaning, and interpreter. Modern semioticians look at the entire network of signs and symbols around us that mean different things in different contexts, even signs or symbols that are sounds. Think of what an ambulance siren communicates when you are driving: Someone is endangered and we are in a hurry to help. Pull over to the side of the road and let us drive by. Textual Signs Intertextuality is a type of subtle communication in that what we write or say often is recollecting something shared between us. For example, if you mimic James Earl Jones deep baritone saying Luke, you can transmit a raft of Star Wars images and sounds and meanings. Knowing the semiotics you are, Grasshopper, is a reference both to Master Yoda and to Master Po in the 1970s Kung Fu television series. In fact, you could argue that Yoda was a semiotic reference to Master Po. Metaphors can act as meaningful stand-ins to people who are familiar with the culture: He was a rock to me in my hour of need and That coffee is hotter than Hades are intertextual references to the Judeo-Christian Bible, and theyre so common that it doesnt matter whether youve read the Bible. Metonyms can, too: The Smoke is a metonym for London, a reference to its once-prevalent smog, which still means London even if the smog is less prevalent. Writing William Shakespeares and Lewis Carrolls writings are full of puns and cultural references, some of which, sadly, are no longer meaningful to modern speakers. The master of intertextuality was the Irish writer James Joyce, whose books such as Ulysses are so dense with snippets of different and invented languages and cultural references that the modern reader needs hypertexts- live weblinks- to get them all: Stephen closed his eyes to hear his boots crush crackling wrack and shells. You are walking through it howsomever. I am, a stride at a time. A very short space of time through very short times of space. Five, six: the nacheinander. Exactly: and that is the ineluctable modality of the audible. A hypertext supports semiotic understanding. We know what a hypertext means: Here youll find a definition of this term or this phrase. Nonverbal Communication Many ways that we communicate with one another are nonverbal. A shrug, a roll of the eyes, a wave of the hand, these and thousands of other subtle and unsubtle body language memes communicate information to another person. Vocalics is a type of nonverbal communication embedded into speech: the pitch, tone, rate, volume, and timbre of spoken language communicate  additional information about the underlying meaning of a group of words. Personal space is also a form of semiotics that is specific to a culture. A person approaching too close to you in Western culture might seem a hostile incursion, but in other cultures personal space dimensions are different. Simply touching someone can calm an angry or sad person, or enrage or offend them, depending on the context. Sources Chandler, Daniel. Semiotics: The Basics.Klarer,  Mario. Reflective report - Essay Example The essay drew positive feedback from my tutor and earned a good grade. I attribute this success to the extensive research that I got involved in and comprehensive analysis of the literature materials therein. Taking into account that employees’ job satisfaction takes variations, the essay had to be well planned in different parts to ensure that all the aspects were dealt with. The authenticity of the essay was definitely incredible. In the essay, I recognized other authors’ work that I cited and ensured that the work was free from any plagiarism. Essay 2 The second essay had the question â€Å"How can performance of service be achieved without compromising on the satisfaction of employees?† this was majorly based on finding ways in which the satisfaction of employees is achieved without necessarily compromising on the quality of product and service delivery. The essay tackled service delivery and product quality extensively. The intrinsic and extrinsic employee motivation was also explored as a way of improving the service delivery. This essay is by and large a supplement for the first one. I thought that the first essay was more leant on dealing with the satisfaction of the employees as opposed to the improvement of service delivery and the production of quality products. ... was because the first essay tackled the employees’ aspect while this second one made a bridge between the employees and the quality of products and service delivery. During the April viva, I am certain that the panelists would want me to explain the choice of my topics and the push that I had in the subject matter. Carrying out a research is always tasking and I am sure that they will want me to explain to them how I managed my research, how I got my materials and the general ups and down that characterize research work. The panelists will also want to know my organization in as far as the research work is concerned and want to know how different it is from the usual course work. Eventually, they will seek to know the relevance and my reasons for having the second essay. During that time, I will get an opportunity to prove myself and to elaborate how well I have the grip on the content matter of the topics that I chose. Course reflection Reflecting on my research, there are a lot of positivity in the work I did though I realized that there are certain things that I would have done better. My organization during the research was good. I ensured that I searched for the relevant materials and did extensive research. In the first essay, I was very keen not to have repetitions that are unnecessary. I had a lot of materials that were enough to back up the items that I discussed. The better part of the organization of my research was as a result of adequate use of the research log. Throughout my sourcing of materials, I was keen to keep track of the materials that I came by so as to give me an easy time during the actual and final compilation of the research. The research techniques that I used were adequate and helped me in compiling the content of the first essay. The

Irish tort law - Essay Example Define nervous shock Before we go to the analysis proper there is a need to define what is ‘nervous shock’? Cane, P. (1993) defines the term saying: â€Å"This term is often now objected to as having no obvious meaning, and terms such as ‘mental injury’ or ‘psychiatric damage’ are often put in its place. But such terms do not capture the full range of situations covered by the older term, and so we have decided to retain it. Nervous shock is injury caused by the impact on the mind, through the senses, of external events.† He explained the term as follows: This term is often now objected to as having no obvious meaning, and terms such as ‘mental injury’ or ‘psychiatric damage’ are often put in its place. But such terms do not capture the full range of situations covered by the older term, and so we have decided to retain it. Nervous shock is injury caused by the impact on the mind, through the senses, of external events. Injury caused by the impact on the mind of external events, which is recognized by law, is of three types physical injury — a pregnant woman may suffer a miscarriage or a person may suffer a heart attack or a stroke; psychological injury such as hysteria, neurosis, depression or any other recognized psychiatric illness; and psychosomatic effects of psychiatric illnesses, such as paralysis. What is the legal rule in the compensatability of the regarding nervous shock? Cane (1993) answered the above question by saying: It must be stressed at the outset that no difficulty arises about awarding damages to a person who suffers nervous shock or even mental distress short of nervous shock, where this follows from the infliction of physical injuries on the sufferer.

International Finance - Essay Example The production cycle will remain running smoothly without experiencing any interruptions. The trend of futuristic deals is more prevalent and traditional in the market that works to sell and purchase financial instruments. The future contracts are more formal in nature and it is often considered unacceptable, if a party wants to break the contract or simply opt not to perform its contractual duties. The disadvantaged party reserves the right to take the matter into a court of law in response to the breach of a future contract (Moosa & Bhatti, 2009). The shares and bonds are purchased with the help of future contracts because it allows the purchaser to hedge against the possibility of higher price of the same instrument at a future date. The seller on the other hand tends to manage the risk of falling prices in the future by securing a deal in the present on a reasonable return rather than waiting for the actual market situation to emerge in the future (Pilbeam, 2010). Another interesting fact should be kept in mind that senior and experienced investors and businessmen do not enter into future contracts due to their formal nature but they tend to use options instead. The options are favored because of their informal nature and they can also be broken by paying modest mutually settled fees. In the case of future contracts, the ramifications of nonperformance are more severe in nature due to strict legality of the contract. Additionally, future contracts are entered by those investors and businessmen who do not want to take the pressure of facing market risks at a specific period of time and therefore, look and plan to safeguard their interests beforehand (Baillie & McMahon, 1989). The investors of abovementioned mindset safeguard their stance against rising prices but they also forego potential benefit that they may reap if the price of the instrument drops in

Rhet writing homework - Essay Example While Europe was busy slaughtering animals potentially infected with Foot-and-Mouth disease and Mad Cow Disease, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tried to curb the outbreak of BSE in the U.S. by expediting new rules that prohibited the use of certain proteins in cattle feeds (Schlosser 272). Stakeholders fought the FDA’s decision arguing that the body’s linking of the animal diseases to human infections was â€Å"totally unsupported by any scientific evidence† (Schlosser 273). They, therefore, somehow found a way to bring British meat into the American market. What followed was the death of ten young people who had contracted a previously unknown ailment but later called new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), which effectively destroyed their brains. Some of the victims had been â€Å"keen consumers of beef burger† (Schlosser 199). This disease was later established to be the human form of BSE. Indeed, Meat packing companies are effectively sh own to play a crucial role in spreading these forms of pathogens. The conditions of work in most of the meat packing companies do not allow for aseptic handling of these products. As such, the meat is often contaminated with pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli among others (Schlosser 202). Their tendency to ignore the swabbing and testing of the meat products for these pathogens before distribution to the market, as required by law, is seen as the main loophole through which pathogens get to end-point consumers. Their argument, of course, has to do with the economics of performing these procedures, which had previously condemned thousands of tons of meat products. Perhaps the most captivating was the rejection of Bauer Meats, with the government declaring them â€Å"unfit for human consumption,† after an eleven-years-old child got seriously ill (Schlosser 219). However, the most recent scandal involving the meatpacking industry has to do with the detection of Horse meat in Findu’s beef Lasagna. According to the FSA, â€Å"Findus analyzed 18 of its beef lasagna meals and found 11 contained between 60% and 100% horsemeat† (Sky News). Investigations revealed that it was a case of mislabeling, a role that is entirely undertaken in the meatpacking companies. Consequently, Findu’s 320g, 360g and 500g meals were withdrawn from supermarket shelves (Sky News). Crime in the Meat packing companies do not end there though. Approximately over a century after Upton Sinclair discredited that apparently large slaughterhouse complex in Chicago as a â€Å"jungle,† numerous studies have been conducted. These studies have documented numerous negative effects of slaughterhouses on workers and communities (Fitzgerald, Kalof, and Dietz 1). Starting from the poor working conditions in these companies to the unnatural acts that happened behind their walls, meat packing companies participate in criminal activities that negatively affect the socie ty. Indeed, most of the workers interviewed in Fast Food Nation confirm that this is the worst job an individual can be doing. Reiterating that meat packing companies always operated on profit margins, these workers quoted the 1999 survey that established injury rates in these companies as being â€Å"†¦26.7 per 100 hundred workers. For the rest of U.S. manufacturing, it was 9.2 per hundred workers† (Schlosser 172). The injuries mainly resulted from the sharp knives whole the ailments resulted from the cold working

English - Essay Example Many people have had their faith in the American dream shattered by the crisis and the loss of their home. Many have said that the whole financial system will collapse due to the huge problems revealed by the credit crunch and the failure of banks around the world. In the face of these problems each country has had to find economic policies to try to stave off a serious depression. Many economists believe the crisis began because of a big asset boom in the United States. Banks and other lenders gave away many loans at very low interest rates to people who simply who could not afford to pay back the money. In the beginning this led to a huge boom in housing prices because there were so many buyers in the housing market and there was a high demand and a somewhat low supply. However, eventually what happened was that people began to default on their mortgage payments. During the boom years many complicated financial products involving mortgages were bought and sold by banks and it was d ifficult to know how many of these "toxic mortgages" were actually on a banks balance sheet. As the number of defaults and foreclosures increased people began to become very nervous as they had trouble determining the value of banks stocks and how many bad mortgages they held. These are serious problems the government needs to fix. We need to have a new era of hope and faith in order for people to begin to believe in the American dream

Changing of Women Rules in Global Business Essay Example for Free

Changing of Women Rules in Global Business Essay Now, the role of women in todays society is becoming increasingly visible and important than in comparison with the situation of 30 years ago. More and more women have started to try their self in different areas of human society, such as politics, science, business, journalism, charity etc. And areas such as entrepreneurship and business is no exception, on the contrary, they have become a priority because the people who are successful in business will always be respected and considered, especially in the world mens rules. Since ancient times, men do not take women, as it was believed that a womans place in the family sphere, it is unusual and should stay at home, manage the household, raise children, take care of her husband and so forth, but those days are long gone, and the woman is free to do what though no one can deny them. While many may disagree with that, especially in societies living on the old foundations, and Sharia law, where the woman stays at home and raises her children. And I must admit that in the West and in the more developed countries, women with all other than for example in Muslim countries. Women are much freer in their choice and the right activities. That is, they are not worse than men; at least the governments of these countries have taken measures to gender equality and discrimination against women. Equality of rights is the essential foundation of any democratic society that aspires to social justice and respect for human rights. The modern woman in this world are becoming more and more independent, hence, with men moving into the background taking place with them on a social level by changing their stereotypes, which were considered by it since childhood, but when she decided to climb the social ladder, it must prepare for the development of foreign territory. And the higher it will go up, the less it will be around the fairer sex. Thus, for a higher level of women need to learn the rules of conduct in a mans world. The participation of women in business in the developed world and the familiar phenomenon is not surprising in the business world and society. Most commands respect the fact that women are showing remarkable abilities and business acumen. This paper is designed to explore the nature of womens social position and description of the main characteristics of their social status and studies of women in todays economy and business, market pressures on its social health. 1. The paradox of female companionship. According to the UN Population Division, 49. 7% of the population is women. It is difficult to understand the true customs and traditions, to experience how people live in a particular country. Moreover, even more difficult to provide an accurate picture of the situation of women in different countries where the image of a womans life is not as noticeable, where the woman does not participate in economic and political life of the country, where, as a rule, she plays the role of a wife, mother, mistress of the hearth . But sometimes those women, about which we firmly There are certain stereotypes are not living the way we imagine, have certain rights and status in society. It is known that Japanese women live in a society where dominates and rules the man. The dominant role of men in this country has developed historically for a long time, and, as in all countries of the East, the predominant role is expressed everywhere: in the business environment, and the arts, and in politics. But the beauty and uniqueness of Japanese women, her desire to agree, its great patience, a sense of harmony and balance in all things, the willingness to sacrifice were known to ancient times and carried the glory of a Japanese woman around the world. Japanese wife running the business is reconciled with the fact that her husband is found not more than a couple days a week. It may seem that the Japanese woman is under the yoke of patriarchy and pressure from the men. However, this is not the case. That Japanese has more rights than women of other countries in Asia and the Orient. Japanese woman confides education of children and the decision of their fate, it is completely given the right to dispose of her husbands earnings and decide what expenses and how much need to be done, the Japanese women work, and some of them are financially stable and resting on the feet. Japanese women are able to hide their feelings, build diplomatic relations with her husband, seeking from him a lot more than European women. But even with a lot of rights, under the influence of civilization, becoming more independent, educated and self-confident, a Japanese woman still accompanies her husband to the door, with reverence and obedience to lower our heads bowed her husband followed. In Iran, is rarely seen without a black woman, at least a green curtain that hides her hair, the shape, and sometimes even the face. From the outside it seems that the women in this traditional and patriarchal country have virtually no rights and are entirely dependent on men. In fact, it is in Iran, women live an active and fulfilling life. Active and energetic Iranian women evolved over many centuries. O daughters of checks that are cutting their beautiful hair and wore a military armor, as well as men to defeat the enemy, there is still a legend. Therefore, even the leader of the revolution in Iran, Imam Khomeini said that for the revolution is to thank the women. The case for women of the East, we can say that their situation is not so bad as we describe the Western media, so whether women in general to engage in politics or business to the detriment of his personal life and family. After all, we all know what this means, when a woman chooses a career, not a family. In Western countries, a woman does not want to lag behind men because society is so constructed that causes compete with the opposite sex, and to claim their rights. Thus, women put themselves under the family or career choice and the choice often falls on the first option. As a result, it leads to divorce or refraining from family relationships. Frequent quarrels and not paying enough attention to children, that leads to the child becoming self-contained and further experience severe stress. Also, women in these countries often lead dissolute lifestyle, drinking, smoking, etc. And it is for these reasons that many women somovolno decide to start a family, abandoning the business activity, and not because someone is prohibited for them or criticizes it. 2. Concept of â€Å"Businesswomen†. In most of the female population is at least half the workforce. At the time, the women are still facing difficulties in fully participating in the production process; they are, however, increase their buying power. Demographic studies show that an increasing number of women, who increasingly have to make decisions of financial issues. This trend is reflected in our developing world, where most of the immigrants were women. Women play an important and growing role in the global economy; they make a significant contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) by increasing the level of consumption of goods and especially the use of services. It is assumed that the increased participation of the female population in the labor market contributes to the potential growth of the economy, especially in the west. In most developed countries among students, first degree, as well as incomplete higher (the minimum period of training two years), more girls than boys. To business and to the success of women are moving a lot of reasons and motivations. Below are some of them: The desire to create the present and future of their own work; Hope unification into one work and personal life; The desire to realize their hopes and their style of business activity; Waiting for a good reward for their efforts and increase their personal wealth, Ability to reveal his I, his abilities as the previous post did not contribute to this; The tendency to take risks, find a way out of risk situations; The value of the specifics of growing back, which founded the company; The impact of friends and acquaintances; 3. Japan and Korea are among the leading countries in Asia: 65% and 52%, respectively (information is based on a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). In general, this trend must modern employment opportunities, as well as increase the cost of living are not cheering. In general education strengthens position in the labor market, increasing its potential earnings. Migration of women to the private sector is not accidental. It is here that women managers can achieve some success. Business requires knowledge of financial problems, Mastering accounting, psychology, communication, and marketing. The rapid growth of economy women the burning topic of conversation, reports impress with reference to The Financial Times. According to the Boston Consulting Group, women control $ 12 trillion in global spending and are the driving force for earnings growth on a global scale, 5 trillion dollars, says journalist Lucy Warwick-Chin. From 2000 to 2007, in the U. S. he number of wealthy women, not less than one thousand five hundred dollars for investment, increased by 68%, while the number of wealthy men only 36%. Therefore, the economy women are called a force to be reckoned with. It is expected that its global economic impact in the coming years will be greater than that of Brazil, Russia, India and China combined. In some countries, women understand the strength of the economy is better: the powers of women in the U. S. are much higher, and their contribution to the economy more than British women and other women of the world. There is also a tendency to increase the number of women in business every year the percentage coming into the business men and women favor the women. From this we can conclude that the role of women in society as a whole is growing every year. Already, many men in business recognized for a number of their women preeminent in fact, in many areas of business activity, the stronger sex surrendered their positions. Thus, a woman in the business has a number of objective advantages over men, there are literally ome grown women hairdressing salons, beauty salons, retail trade, in general, any commercial enterprise, requiring attention to detail, with little or average number of staff personnel. The proportion of women is higher in small business, then medium businesses. In the large, the more international business, men continue to lead but in the management of the business often are forced to have female staff, as its presence in certain circumstances treats business tactics activi ties. According to psychologists, a woman in the business of building a more cautious relationship with its business partners, avoiding excessive risk-taking, sharp turns. It is particularly sensitive to the issues of corporate culture, introducing an element of warmth and nepotism in the business life of the strict rules of the organization. These factors, among other things, increase the profitability of new technologies that increase productivity. Female leader, as a carrier of emotional start, can acutely feel the psychological climate in the team, to understand what was going on the conflict, and, perhaps, to prevent its onset. In conclusion, I would like to give an answer of the American writer and historian G. Wils on the question of the most significant changes: For the past 40 years, the status of women has changed as it has not changed over the past four centuries. No change has not affected so deeply social. Changed relationship between wife to her husband, mother to child, woman to woman.

Lifestyles of K-Pop Authors

Lifestyles of K-Pop Authors Kpop or Prison? South Korea is a sovereign state in East Asia, with many rules of etiquette and customs based on traditional Chinese ways, but moulded into a unique culture through industrialization, urbanization and westernization. The author, Sonja Vegdahl Hur stated that lurking behind the sometimes stoic Korean faà §ade is a multitude of emotions. However, in the Kpop industry idols are expected to show a profusion of emotions but have to refine them in order to create an image of complete perfection, this is to attract audiences and conform to the trends in their society. Kpop is a genre that originates from 1980s South Korea and is heavily based on audiovisual content and a fusion of foreign musical elements. They present idols in a debut showcase which consists of television broadcast promotions and online marketing instead of radio. But to get to the stage, idols must go through a tough training period for sometimes many years. Sixty years ago Korea was a war-torn country but is now flourishing. This has been achieved through hard work which has been transferred to education. But the globalisation of an already competitive system has caused too much stress from a young age.   Is being diligent in Korea worth the cost of their mental health? These companies obviously use idols dreams against them as in order to be the best, entertainment industries put idols through gruelling periods of dance, vocal training, learning many languages and instruments. Granted, this method does have strengths; the ingrained idea that success is key to a good life, no matter the cost is a great motivator, but is living their dream worth the stiff price in health and happiness? I dont think so. The proof is in the West. Many artists are extremely popular like Beyoncà ©, yet they never had to learn difficult dance routines or another language to rise to the top. But, this also shows where culture differs, the image of perf ection is not necessarily as important in the West as it is in Korea. Idols are mostly required to dye their hair, wear contacts and get double eye-lid surgery to remove the epicanthic fold in order to appear more perfect and European. All idols participate in music shows such as Inkigayo (like our MTV music charts) where all digital sales, physical album sales, streams and music video views are totalled up and the winner gains the trophy this is vital for the group survival in the industry as if their popularity is in constant decline with hardly no wins the company will most likely drop them and this usually means theyll lose their homes and source of income as its all provided by the company, yet they still have to pay a large proportion for it. Trainees are constantly disciplined by the companies theyre signed under. An ex-SM Entertainment trainee revealed, If you dont improve but youre pretty they tell you to stay underwater and hold your breath for 5 minutes and make you sit in a V and drop basketballs on your stomach when you breathe. This is apparently to encourage the trainee to work harder but it breaches human rights as Korean law prohibits such practices of inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. A famous law suit emerged in 2009. A popular group TVXQ, took their management to court over a 13 year contract which ended with success and the ruling prompted the Fair Trade Commission to bring a model contract in an attempt to improve standards. Another ex-trainee, Stella Kim was interviewed by Le Film Magazine and specified her ordeal during the period she trained under SM; If you were deemed overweight, then you would be weighed in front of everybody and shamed for it. Howbeit, the training affected her even aft er she quit, she went through a stage of anorexia and at her lowest point weighed 90lbs at 5ft 7 along with Korean students at her college in America recognising her and calling her ugly or fat. This shows that training in Korea needs to be reformed as the current method creates idols to develop feelings of self-worthlessness with a distorted set of social values. Soloists and groups need fans in order to keep gaining popularity. However, some fans go overboard and develop a harmful fixation on idols. In Korea theyre called Sasaeng fans. These people are notorious for engaging in actions that inaugurate an invasion of privacy. For example, a member of JYJ, Yoochun found that his home and parking lot had CCTV cameras installed by Saesangs. On the other hand is the opposite extreme, anti-fans. This refers to the torment of idols where people construct organisations to mentally and physically threaten idols. They have committed many crimes and go to extreme methods such as, Yoon Kye-Sang from the group G.O.D who received a drink adulterated with bleach and laundry chemicals which was drunk by his mother, who had to hospitalised. Idols are heavily criticised for appearance in Korea as there is a massive expectation of perfection. A case with girl group Red Velvet, included comments against their youngest member, Yeri who was only 17 at the time, w here netizens internet citizens wrote derogatory sexually explicit comments about her on a live show. In comparison to Western artists, Kpop idols work considerably harder for a little amount of freedom and profit. A comment on a website, Quora mentioned that, Kpop isnt about selling music its about selling idols people that fans worship.   Furthermore, Kpop artists are overworked; F(x)s Krystal collapsed on stage due to fatigue as sleeping only 2 hours a day became too much to handle, whilst forced to perform. Even after training life for idols is still stressful and difficult. 9MUSES ex-member, Sera mentioned in the documentary, No one treats me as a human being. But idols have to abide by the contracts and stick with the companies until it ends. The contracts allow the companies to take away human rights and basic freedoms which any ordinary person would have. For example, the right to contact family and under the Korean Labour Standards Act it says working hours per week should not exceed 40 hours. In the i-D Magazine (fashion culture magazine), 2NE1 member CL stated, You have to be perfect. You have to perform well, you shouldnt date anyone and fans have a standard image, especially with girls because boys can date anyone.   This conveys the issue of sexism in Korea. Statistics from a picture on Instagram revealed that there was at least a 10 million Won ( £6839.32) pay gap between male and female idols. An actress, Jang Ja Yeon, age 29 committed suicide and explained in a let ter that her former agency CEO, Kim Sung Hun had forced her to meet influential people at parties to provide sexual favours in order to keep her job. In conclusion, Kpop life and training is far worse than artists from Europe. They have more freedom and arent always faced with the difficulty of being from a different nation. To improve conditions, I think companies could (and should) let their idols sleep more, eat, wear and sing what they want. To be more equal, both genders should be paid for doing the same thing and whilst training be allowed more free time to rest and be treated more like a human being and not an object to gain the company more money and fame. Whilst netizens complain about idols low health, they should in fact criticise their companies more in order to make a change and the industry must realise that the combination of extremely high standards and a lifestyle that makes those standards impossible to meet wont make idols happy or able produce content to the best of their ability. Therefore, they deserve better working conditions. Bibliography Primary Source: Culture Shock! The Natural Environment and the Human Condition :: Environment Environmental Pollution Preservation

To consider the human condition apart from the natural environment is both foolish and inconceivable. It is in unity with a modern mode of thought that humans are raised to think that they are in some way separated from their natural environment. In developed society the weather has become nothing more than something to discuss with the person standing next to you in the checkout line. Population refers to how many people will be at the movies this weekend. Agriculture is what shows up in the produce section of the grocery store and fire is something you can find on You_Tube and watch on your television screen. Practically nothing directly relates to the environment that we are so intrinsically a part of. Humanity has neglected to develop a consciousness about its position in a world, which includes but is not defined by human society. As far as we know, the beginnings of humanity date back to 3.5 million years ago. Homo erectus (the earliest form of man) was roaming the earth, in Africa, with his hands free enabling him to travel great distances and utilize basic stone tools. The species Homo erectus lived in small, hunter-gatherer groups. Because of constant movement, in search of vegetation and game in addition to a small population, he was unable to leave a lasting impact on the environment. (Ponting) Essentially, he was a very smart ape. (McCrone) Just 100,000 years ago came the development of Homo sapiens whom had a larger brain case and far more advanced hunting techniques, using bolas stones, snarling and trapping. And 30,000 years ago came the development of Homo sapiens sapiens. The bow and arrow was developed along with the needle and thread. Tools and technology were quickly developing and man had the resourcefulness for global spread. The manipulation of fire is regarded as one of mans greatest feats concerning early technology. There is a debate as to when man first intentionally used fire, McCrone argues that Homo erectus was successfully using fire as a tool about 1.5 million years ago. He doesn't think that Homo erectus would have been able to spread its population the way it did without the use of fire which would have facilitated cooking, food preservation and tool making; all of which would have been necessary to migrate great distances. There is evidence of hearths being used in Europe as early as 400,000 years ago, which clearly require controlled use of fire.

Joy Ride

Michelle Cronin Professor Radford English 101 8 October 2012 Begging for an Escape â€Å"Joy Ride† is a short story written by Richard Russo. It features a boy, John Dern, and his mother, who both long for an escape from their lives at the time. This story follows the theme that one key aspect the human condition is the search for an escape. At some point in life, most humans wish to escape their past and present state of living. There may be many motivating factors behind this. However, most attempt to escape for one of three main reasons. These include using an escape as a means of finding freedom, an escape to help another person, or just as a temporary move to solve a problem. In this story, John and his mother have all three reasons in the back of their minds as they see their lives disappear in the rearview mirror. John’s mother wants an escape so that she can be free. Free from stress, free from worry, free from her husband†¦ So she leaves a note with a simpl e goodbye and she is off. She takes her son with her and breaks free from the ties that bind her. She believes that this country is big enough for a fresh start for the both of them. She says, â€Å"It’s not only a free country, it’s a big one. Big enough for us to get lost in. We’re bound for freedom, sweetie† (76). John’s mother is trying to explain to him that this country is huge, and that if the two of them try, they can get lost in the freedom. They have the power and the ability to leave, escaping the lifestyle they are in right now. By leaving, they have the opportunity make anything of their future. John’s mother also explains that she wants to be free from the marriage that is slowly ripping her apart. She says, â€Å"It’s just that living with him – being married to him – is just like being covered with these little cuts all the time. There’s no big gash you can show anybody, nothing they’d believ e would really hurt, but these damn little nicks, they suck the blood right out of you† (92). John’s mother would like to be free of her husband’s ties that seem to terrorize her wherever she goes. It appears that he does nothing to cause her extraordinary pain, but the little problems are the ones that hurt her the most. Just being with her husband leaves her with all of these painful thoughts and memories every single day. It’s the little problems that John’s mother is trying so hard to escape. However, her motivation for escape also has to do with John. He needs this escape as much as his mother. John was growing up and falling in with the wrong crowd, making very bad decisions. His â€Å"friends† talk of a trip they took to Old Orchard Beach in Maine. When thinking about this, John decides that he too needs to get out of Camden. â€Å"This is exactly the kind of adventure I feared and longed for† (78). In this quote, John is conveyi ng his need for escape. His mother sees how necessary an escape is and how desperately John needs a new outlook on life. And this is exactly what his mother intends to give him. As they go on their journey, both John and his mother experience a little taste of the freedom they have hungered for. Years later when discussing the trip, his mother explains the real reason behind the joy ride. â€Å"I’ll tell you what I do remember. I remember that the reason for that trip was you. What I remember was the vicious little monster you were becoming† (110). In this quote, John’s mother is revealing her true motive behind their escape. She wanted to give him an experience that would allow him to change the way he was behaving before it became too late. Her son was falling in with the wrong crowd and she wanted him to get out of there as fast as possible before he did something horrible. Whether the escape is permanent or temporary, it remains a memory that will forever be e ngrained in one’s mind. An escape can last anywhere from minutes to a lifetime, but it will remain a memory throughout one’s entire life. For example, when reminiscing, John says â€Å"This whole trip was nothing more than a joy ride, like the one my junior high friends had taken, and now I could understand their reluctance to talk about it.No doubt it had been a shabby thing, devoid of glory† (108). John is saying that their escape had only been a temporary freedom and that it ended shortly after it had begun. In comparing his joy ride with that of his friends, he claims that both did not end up the way they had imagined and that he did not want to talk about it, just as his friends had not wanted to talk about their trip. However, he goes on to say â€Å"More than twenty years now, as I think back on our joy ride that spring, it seems far more remarkable than it did at the time†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (109).He is expressing his sincere thought on the subject in that ev en after decades have passed. Although it seemed to somewhat fail because he and his mother ended up going back to his father at the time, with time, he begins to realize that the trip meant more than he originally thought. No matter how long or short the escape is, the memory will last a lifetime. The word escape can be defined in many ways. The definition that applies most to this story is â€Å"an act of breaking free from confinement or control. † In â€Å"Joy Ride,† John and his mother were begging for an escape from their life.Throughout the actual trip, John’s mother had him convinced that she wanted to escape from her husband. But at the end of the story after years have passed, she explains that the true reason behind the escape was to change the path he was walking. John needed to escape the group he was in. People attempt to escape for many reasons. For John and his mother, it was for freedom, freedom from John’s father, freedom from the expect ations of John’s friends. And although it was not a permanent escape, it will be permanently engrained in the minds of both John and his mother.
